What books/series have you read that you would recommend to a Gemma fan. My recommendations: - Harry Potter (of course)
- The Key to the Kingdom by Garth Nix
- Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (?)
- So You Want to be a Wizard (series) by Diane Duane
That's it for now. How 'bout you?

Oo, I recently read a book called Sabriel by Garth Nix. It was great and very similar to AGATB.

I like the comparison to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants... I never thought of that but they are kind of similar.
BTW, totally random but I love your screenname, Squeegee_Beckenhimer (i love gilmore girls!)

Heehee, thanks cinda! That's my nickname now, along with Glitch. I agree about the Sisterhood thing. Very interesting.
I really don't like to compare her books to Harry Potter though. They don't really have that much in common. Also, I love Libba's books and, not to be offensive but, I just don't think the HP books are all that good. I did like the first 3 but after that not so much. Especially since she kept killing off my favorite characters. ><

Oh, well it was the beginning of an episode in season..... 3, I think? Maybe 4? Loralie and Rory were going through all the magazine subscriptions they had and Lor was listing all the fake names she had subscribed under and one of them was Squeegee Beckenhimer. ^^
And as for the topic of similar books, I've always thought Libbas' sense of humor was a lot like Lemony Snickets'. You know, that sort of dark sarcasm.

I recently read Poison Study (Book 1) and Magic Study (Book 2) and I'll soon start reading the third and final, I think, Fire Study from the Study trilogy by Maria V. Snyder and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED it!! I really do think Gemma Doyle trilogy fans would enjoy this trilogy!!

i agree that HP isn't really like AGATB, though i enjoy both. they're very unique books - the only other magical series that comes a little close is the chronicles of narnia (for me, anyway). i think AGATB is a little jane austen-y, which reminds me of another one of my favorites, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, which has a similar wit.

Oh NO!! I can totally understand that people like the Twilight Sage, for some mysterious and inexplicable reason I can't seam to get, but it can in no way be compared to the greatness of The Gemma Doyle trilogy. People keep comparing the two and it pisses me of. In just three books Libba addresses and explores such huge and important issues like:
- Homosexuality
- Racism
- Social discrimination
- Child abuse
- Self inflicted injuries
- Drugs
- Alcoholism
- Freedom of speech and will
- Women's rights
And philosophical questions such as wrong and right, heaven and hell, fate and choices, social limitations and personal ambitions and so on.
The Twilight Sage is like: Edward is handsome, Edward is gorgeous, Edward has great hair, Edward has shinny teeth, Edward is rich and beautiful, Edward has an ostentatious car, Edward's breath smells great, Bella dreams about Edward, Bella loves Edward, Bella fainted when Edward kissed her and so on for 512 pages.
Those two books have nothing in common.
