Yeah, I agree with that, but for right now, it's really fun picking out actors.

My general opinion on casting is that they should find four unknowns for Gemma, Felicity, Ann and Pippa and then fill out the rest of teh cast with famous actors. I disagree!! Harry Potter was a worldwide phenomenon so they could afford to have unknowns, it was so huge that turned the unknown actors into international superstars overnight but when they tried to do the same with The Golden Compass, a multi timed awarded book, it backfired terribly. Even the producers of the super popular Twilight series, that has tons of fans already, decided to play it safe and get Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson for the main parts!! Kristen and Robert might not be super famous but they got a quite respectable bio and experience. A Great and Terrible Beauty is a superb book but doesn't have a great fanbase, so if they want to attract fans they should choose low-profile but experienced actors (that will give a good performance) for the main parts and famous actors for the supportive roles!!

TBH, I think that Harry Potter is a worldwide phenonon now--but not back in 2000 when they started casting for the movies. It was probably a lot more popular than these books, but now everyone knew about HP like they do now.
And what are you talking about with the Golden Compass backfiring? It did very mediocre in the US, but outside the US it did extremeley well.

I have to say that I think a lot of these choices are bad because the people can't act. I mean, Emma Roberts? Alyson Stoner? Seriously!? But some of them, I really like. I love Collen and Suzanne Dengel, but I have no idea if they can act.

It was probably a lot more popular than these books, but now everyone knew about HP like they do now. I was not aware of HP before watching the first movie but when my sister took me to the movies we had quite a difficulty to get tickets and we live in Greece.
And what are you talking about with the Golden Compass backfiring? It did very mediocre in the US, but outside the US it did extremeley well. Golden Compass did not do nearly as good as expected. They thought it to be the next HP they even took Dakota Blue Richards on the HP set to get 'advice' by the HP trio.
The Gemma Doyle trilogy has potential to become greater than both HP and LOTR but in order for this to work they need a good director, one hell of a cast and strong promotion. Every single one of the Gemma Doyle trilogy characters is twice as complected than the HP characters and require someone who can handle their great emotional depth, especially Gemma. They should cast someone not terribly famous but most definitely experienced.

Casting unknowns doesn't equal inexperience. Just because someone hasn't made it big doesn't mean they aren't a good actor.

yeah, that is true. just because you're "experienced" doesn't mean you'll be better. some people are have been in many movies and they can't act worth crap. experience doesn't always equal great.
i want unknowns because they'll be fresh and interesting, not someone that i've seen in previous movies, because then i'll just keep identifing them with their former roles and they'll never truly become that character for me....

I can see what you mean but actresses like Hurd-Wood, Popplewell, Bolger and Ronan are not exactly crazy-famous international superstars!! I bet there are a lot of people who've never even heard their names before!!
Only Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Georgie Henley and Rachel Hurd-Wood had zero acting experience before getting into a massive movie that turned them into international superstars over night.
Daniel Radcliffe, Emily Browning, Anna Popplewell, Skandar Keynes, William Moseley, Liam Aiken, Jeremy Sumpter they ALL had previous acting experience before getting into a movie that made them well known.
I'm not against an unknown cast but LOTR had an all stars cast and totally ROCKED so I can't see why AGATB can't have one!! I want it to be HUUUUUUUUUGE if they ever decide to go on and make the d**n movie!! I'd like it to be the movie of the year rocking box-offices all over the globe!!

I don't honestly care how well the first movie does, as long as it does well enough so it's decided there will be a 2nd and 3rd movie.

There is this girl at my old high school who I was in drama with and she is pretty much perfect for Gemma. She is an awesome actress and can do an English accent well. I know she is a huge fan of the books so she might have an account on here. Let me know what you guys think... stole those from her myspace her name is brittany rose gladstone btw.

Hmmm...Not bad. I like her. You should tell her that you think she'd be good as Gemma and you should invite her to join

Full lips, gray eyes, blondish hair....she could be a Fee but she's 24 already and American.
Someone suggested today Bonnie Wright as Gemma.
She's a possibility but I'm not crazy about it. I much-much prefer Rachel!!!

Kartiklove, the girl you suggested has an account on the IMDB boards. I just saw her pic on a thread there about 5 mins ago lol. Small world, I like most of these choices just not Emma Roberts. Or the girl that played Hermione. Simply because neither of htem can act lol. But I like the Alexaa Vega idea.
